 Video Production Class

The Middle School boys are creating original short films in their video production class. This year they jumped right in to the ancient Chinese art of shadow puppetry. The boys first made articulated paper puppets, scenery, and props. Then they used stop motion animation to create a story. Finally, they edited their films and added sound. 

The movies are made using the school iPads along with three apps: StopMotionStudio, iMovie, and GarageBand. They are drawing, constructing, animating, filming, editing, and making their own digital music scores!

Chanukah and Math

I know what you are thinking...what do Chanukah and math have in common? Well, as it turns out, a lot!  This week, the middle school students were making Chanukah cards on Desmos graphing calculator in their algebra class.  You should have seen the look on their faces when I told them about the project and subsequently the conversations that were taking place while at work. They worked very hard and wrote many equations to create the design that each one had sketched.

During November, many students in our upper school participated in the Evelyn Linden Baldwin Writing Competition.  While applying the skills they’ve acquired in their English classes, students selected a writing style through which they addressed this year’s prompt:  An import mitzvah in Judaism is Tikkun Olam, or Repairing the World.  How do you fulfill this mitzvah?

Students reflected on the subject, engaged in conversation about the importance of this mitzvah, and developed responses such as narratives about family members who have inspired them to action, and poetry responses in which they express their intentions to “Repair the World”.  Teachers helped facilitate discussions, and… Read More »

When I first started teaching, at the beginning of each school year, I used to ask my students to research and write a 5 paragraph essay on a career that uses math. I watched my students’ puzzled faces; not only were they being asked to write in math, but also they were realizing that there are actually careers that use math.

As math teachers,  we have an obligation to show our students the relevance of mathematics.  It is our duty to make mathematical ideas, equations, and calculations come alive, and what better way is there to do that than to integrate math with other subjects such as science and language arts.
