20180131_114106.jpgA wonderful annual event took place on January 31st at Hebrew Academy of Orange County to connect students and their families over education, values, and traditions. The school’s annual Intergenerational Day took place on the Hebrew date of Tu b’Shevat, the Jewish new year for trees with many related activities and festivities including planting etrog trees in the school’s Israel orchard as a symbol of continuing life and passing on of traditions.20180131_113716.jpg

The celebration was full of meaningful experiences for the children and adults alike. It was an opportunity for students to connect with other generations in their family, whether grandparents, aunts, uncles or other family members. The opportunity for non-parental family members to visit the students’ school offered them a way to connect to their experiences at school, not only scholastically and socially, but also experientially.  20180131_114218.jpg

The school created this special day to honor grandparents and family members, to give them the opportunity to show love for their children's children and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer. This program brought the kind of joy that brings tears to the eyes. Students learn shared culture and norms while, for the grown-ups, it reduces social isolation and fulfills a need to nurture and teach.

This year’s Intergenerational Day included activities such as painting family trees, Israeli dancing, and sports & games in the soccer field. The middle school students had a fun parachute-fall activity to share. Over 350 participants enjoyed a nutritional lunch in the large outdoor covered patio with entertainment provided by the school’s choir singing Hebrew and Jewish songs.

Concluding with each family member receiving a fig or pomegranate tree cutting to plant in their garden, Hebrew Academy of Orange County hopes that family members were able to continue the growth from generation to generation.
